Instructions
Basic Oven Method:
Prepare the potatoes: Thinly slice 4 medium russet potatoes (~1/4 inch thick).
Cook the beef: Brown 1 pound ground beef with 1 diced onion. Drain excess fat.
Mix sauce: Combine cream of chicken soup, milk, and sour cream (or use homemade cream sauce).
Layer the casserole in a 9x13 inch dish:
Bottom: potato slices (season with salt, pepper, garlic powder)
Middle: cooked beef and onion mixture
Pour sauce evenly
Top: shredded cheddar cheese
Optional: Add crispy toppings (French-fried onions, potato chips) during the last 10–15 minutes of baking.
Bake at 350°F for 45–60 minutes, or until potatoes are tender and top is golden.
Frozen Hashbrown Variation:
Use 4 cups frozen hashbrowns in place of sliced potatoes. No need to thaw.
Layer as usual.
Bake at 375°F for 45–50 minutes, until bubbly and golden on top.
Slow Cooker Instructions:
Layer ingredients directly into the slow cooker.
Cook on low for 6–8 hours or high for 3–4 hours.
Optional: Add cheese or toppings during the final 30 minutes.
