Ingredients

Core Ingredients:

  • 1 loaf crusty sourdough bread preferably day-old
  • 6 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • ½ cup evaporated milk
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 4 tablespoons butter for frying

Optional Flavor Enhancers:

  • Nutmeg ¼ teaspoon
  • Orange zest
  • Pinch of salt
  • Heavy cream for extra richness

Instructions

Prep the Bread:

  • Slice sourdough into ½–1 inch thick slices.
  • Use the middle of the loaf for uniform size (about 5–6 inches long).
  • If bread is fresh, leave it out for a few hours to dry.

Make the Custard:

  • In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, whole milk, evaporated milk, sugar, cinnamon, vanilla, and salt.
  • Optionally, add nutmeg or orange zest for flavor.

Soak the Bread:

  • Dip each slice in the custard and soak for 10–20 minutes depending on thickness.
  • Let custard rest 5 minutes before soaking for better flavor infusion.

Cook the Toast:

  • Heat butter in a skillet over medium heat (325–350°F).
  • Fry each slice for 2–4 minutes per side until golden brown.
  • Repeat in batches, keeping cooked slices warm in a 200°F oven if desired.
